![]() There’s so much potential, and so little accomplished. I ended the whole thing just feeling dissatisfied, no questions answered, and not knowing enough about a handful of characters I liked. Most of the characters are very boring and the ones that weren’t didn’t get the attention and progression they deserved until far too late in a 10 hour audio book. Seriously, R.C Bray does the best voices. The crowning glory of this experience was the narrator. Bray I always enjoy his voice! I enjoyed the story very much, once I understood it was a second book. It’s well narrated of course as it’s R.C. I feel it’s a little less military but there are some good fights. This book we see a lot more of the universe or at lease a few different planets. They are on a collision course with each other. We are following a young girl and her war bot/guardian, a legionnaire-turned-smuggler and his crew (starts up and him and a AI but expands) and a bounty hunter. It’s very military with science fiction weaved in, (we are on a foreign planned in the future) there are aliens. So the first book is set on one world with one group of legionnaires. There is a series and this is the first two. I enjoyed it once I did a quick search on the book and found out it was more than one book. Nope, don’t think I did! But I can’t give this book a negative review. I kept waiting to hear from Legionnaire Sergeant Cohen Chhun. At the time I did not realise it was two books, so I was really enjoying the book then it jumped to seven years later and I did not recognise the characters and I just felt lost. If you get confused about continuity when listening to audiobooks (as I sometimes do), don't buy this book. If you like compelling characters, you won't find them here. (It reminds me of Star Wars in that way, which seems to be the type of universe the authors were hoping to evoke.) As other reviewers have pointed out, there's a disconnect between the two parts, although that's the least of the problems. The characters are so thinly sketched that it was difficult for me to identify or empathize with any of them - or even keep track. What could go wrong? But for some reason, I just couldn't enjoy this - or even follow the story at some points. Bray is a narrator I enjoy, and at 17+ hours it was a good value for the credit. Audible kept recommending Galaxy's Edge for me, R.C. I've listened to hundreds of audiobooks, but this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. Well done Nick Cole and Jason Anspach! If you need me I will be writing reviews on all the other novels in Galaxy's Edge, all of which improve upon the last. This is the first review I have ever written, at least more than the obligatory 15 words, as I feel it is absolutely necessary that this book, and this series, get all the praise and acclaim that it deserves. While they do have clear inspiration from other Sci-Fi sagas (*cough* Star Wars), Galaxy's Edge comes off as its own major player, and dare I say, contender, to be one of the greatest Sci-Fi Sagas. Each installment shows that the authors are creating an entire universe that keeps surprising but does not feel played-out. That is when things became problematic as now I cannot stop reading and listening. And this is just the first half of the audiobook! Jason Anspach and Nick Cole had me hooked from this gripping new take at Military Sci-Fi with the story of Victory, but then they had to go and write more. What is truly impressive and appreciated in the novels are that the tactical and gritty details of the novel were clearly inspired through research and a desire to encapsulate what it is like to be caught behind enemy lines. Seriously, the man seems to know exactly how the authors wanted the characters to be portrayed. ![]() Bray, who brings life and intimacy to them and the story. The characters begin to feel personable, beyond just cookie-cutter military tropes we see over and over, especially through the narration of R.C. The leejes try to make sense of what caused the turmoil and confusion as well as survive, not knowing who to trust besides those fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with them. A battle ensues between the natives and the military force, dictated from the point of view of Chuun who is a leader of a Legionnaire squad, the most elite soldiers in the galaxy. ![]() The story starts focused on boots-on-the-ground military forces that are seeking to add another desert planet's support to the Republic through diplomacy, but things go awry. I wish I had not started because now I cannot stop. However, this is not for the reason you think (obviously from the star rating). Galaxy's Edge "Book 1", consisting of "Legionnaire" and "Galactic Outlaws", came as a recommended listen by Audible a few months ago and I thought, "why not?" Part of me still wishes I had never listened to this book.
